Prairie Village Homes - From Mid Century to Modern

Prairie Village was originally developed in the early 1940's by J.C. Nichols, a succesful Kansas City, Missouri developer. Construction on the first homes began in 1941, and by 1949 Nichols had a thriving community of more than 1,000 homes on his hands. The National Association of Home Builders took notice in 1949, recognizing Prairie Village as the best planned community in America. Steady growth characterterized Prairie Village throughout the postwar era, as many World War II veterans purhased homes in the area with the help of the G.I. bill. In 1951 the community was incorporated as a city.
Most Prairie Village homes date back to the late 1940's and early 1950's. There are a wide variety of Tudor, Cape Cod and Victorian influenced houses throughout the Prairie Village real estate area featuring high pitched roof designs and artfully trimmed exteriors.
